Growing in Grace
Why We Should Desire to Mature in Christ
Jesus promised that He came so we could have life, and life more abundantly (John 10:10). But that abundant life isn’t found in chasing possessions, status, or comfort. It flows from spiritual maturity — learning to walk in the purpose God created us for.
Two people can face the exact same circumstances, yet respond in completely different ways. The difference often comes down to maturity in Christ. A mature believer sees trials through the lens of faith, not fear, and opportunities through the lens of calling, not convenience.
- Maturity Brings Abundant Life
Abundant life doesn’t mean an easy life. It means a meaningful one — a life full of peace, joy, and purpose, even in the middle of challenges. As Paul wrote:
“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
When Christ is at the center, life has depth and abundance that circumstances can’t take away.
- Maturity Shapes Our Response to Circumstances
Two people can walk through the same trial, but maturity makes all the difference in how they respond.
- An immature believer may become bitter, anxious, or hopeless.
- A maturing believer leans on God, finds peace in His promises, and grows stronger in the process.
This is what James meant when he wrote:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” (James 1:2–3)
Maturity doesn’t remove trials, but it transforms how we walk through them.
- Maturity Helps Us Discover Our Purpose
Every one of us was created for a reason. Paul reminds us:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)
As we grow in Christ, we begin to recognize our calling — the unique ways God wants to use us to bless others. And as we step into that purpose, we experience fulfillment and joy that nothing else in life can provide.
- Maturity Teaches Us to Love Life and People
When we walk in our purpose, something shifts. Life is no longer about self-preservation but about pouring out God’s love. Maturing in Christ changes how we see people — not as obstacles or competition, but as souls worth loving.
John put it simply:
“We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
The more we know Christ, the more we reflect His heart toward others.
- Seek First the Kingdom — Purpose Before Provision
Jesus told us:
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
This verse doesn’t mean God ignores our physical needs. It means that when we make His kingdom and His purpose our first pursuit, His provisions naturally follow. In other words, provision is the by-product — not the primary goal.
When we walk in the purpose God created us for, we discover abundant life, peace, joy, and yes — His faithful provision.
Conclusion
Maturity in Christ is not about religious duty — it’s about learning to live the abundant life God intended for us. As we grow in Him, our responses to life change, our sense of purpose deepens, and our love for both life and people expands.
True abundance is found not in what we acquire, but in who we become in Christ. And as we seek His kingdom first, everything else falls into place.
