It’s Not Up To Us To Overcome
It’s Not Up to Us to Overcome — It’s Up to Us to Surrender
One of the greatest lies many Christian’s carry is the belief that it’s up to us to overcome our struggles, to clean ourselves up before coming to God, or to prove that we are worthy of His love. But the truth of the Gospel is this: transformation is not about us forcing change through sheer willpower — it’s about surrendering to the One who has already overcome.
Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Notice He didn’t say we have to conquer sin and brokenness in our own strength. He said He has already overcome — and our role is to trust Him enough to lay our lives down at His feet.
Discovering, Developing, and Deploying Our Purpose
God didn’t save us just to “get by.” He saved us for a purpose. Scripture reminds us: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).
Our journey with Him is not about performance but about purpose:
- Discovering what He created us for.
- Developing our character through His Spirit.
- Deploying our gifts for His Kingdom.
This process requires humility — confessing our strongholds to Him, asking for guidance and understanding, and trusting Him to shape our steps. When we surrender, we make space for Him to begin the perfect work in us He has already promised (Philippians 1:6).
Giving Ourselves the Grace He Freely Gives
Transformation is rarely instant. Some chains fall off the moment we meet Jesus; others take time. God’s grace covers the entire journey. But often, we are harder on ourselves than He is.
If God gives us grace freely, why do we withhold it from ourselves? Surrender means not only trusting Him with our weaknesses, but also accepting His mercy when we stumble. It means saying: “Lord, I may not be where I want to be yet, but I trust You’re leading me where I need to go.”
A Prayer of Surrender
Heavenly Father,
We come to You today with open hearts. We confess that too often we try to overcome in our own strength, and we grow weary. But Lord, we know it is not up to us to conquer sin by ourselves — it is up to us to surrender to You, the One who has already overcome.
Help us to discover the purpose You’ve placed in us, to develop it through Your Spirit, and to deploy it for Your glory. We lay our strongholds before You and ask for Your guidance, wisdom, and understanding. Teach us to give ourselves grace, just as You have given it to us freely.
Lord, we ask that You change our desires for anything that does not align with the purpose You have for us. Transform our hearts so that our lives reflect Your love and truth. Complete the good work You have begun in us, and let us walk in confidence that Your timing and Your ways are perfect.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
